We took some of our alpaca family to the North Somerset Show on Bank Holiday Monday. Showing our alpacas is an essential part of our alpaca breeding program as the results in shows can influence many of our breeding decisions.
The selection of a stud male is a major decision as the stud has a large influence on their offspring. Female alpacas are able to be put to stud from about 14 months old however male alpacas are usually not fully fertile until they are about 2-3 years old although some reach this stage much younger! An alpaca gestation is from about 330 – 370 days and the usual birthing season is from late spring to summer.
Cadbury Alpacas have a responsible alpaca breeding program with the aim of improving fleece and fibre production and helping us move closer to a sustainable commercial fibre industry here in the UK.
We were absolutely delighted when Henry was awarded Reserve Champion Suri Brown Male and Junior was placed as Reserve Champion Suri Light Male.
Our weanlings also did us proud on their first show outing and were very well behaved (for a change). Beautiful Aurora took 1st place in her class and Jupiter and Ophelia took 2nd place in their classes. We are really pleased that handsome Jupiter has gained the recognition he deserves as a future stud male!
