If you are interested in volunteering in North Somerset, Cadbury Alpacas welcomes enthusiastic general volunteers all the year round. We’ve listed below some of the activities that you would be getting involved in if you were to come and help out but be warned – our alpacas have incredible personalities and are highly addictive!

WHAT WILL I BE DOING IF I VOLUNTEER AT CADBURY ALPACAS?
The daily routine may include tasks such as:
- feeding mineral supplements (not as easy as it sounds!)
- topping up hay
- checking, cleaning and filling water troughs
- being on ‘birth watch’
- weighing cria and sometimes bottle feeding them
- paddock and shelter cleaning and maintenance
- halter training
- assisting with alpaca experiences and guests on the business side
- learning about alpaca fibre and helping with our products
- learning about weed control and why it is so important
- assisting with any medical and health needs of individual animals
Depending on how involved you want to become as a volunteer, you may also have the opportunity to learn about:
- handling alpacas
- parasite control, including access to microscope and diagnosing internal parasites
- pasture management
- care of pregnant alpacas and newborn cria
- alpaca nutrition
- foot care
- administration of medicines
- how to identify and prevent illness in camelids
- assisting with the commercial fibre production side of our business
ALPACA BIRTHING SEASON
If you are volunteering at Cadbury Alpacas during the birthing season (July – September) you may be involved with being on ‘birth watch’. It would be useful for you to watch a webinar from Langford Large Animal Practice on ALPACA BIRTHING before your first visit.
WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING WITH ME WHEN I VOLUNTEER?
We advise:
- sun cream
- a hat
- insect protection
- overalls or waterproofs (depending on the time of year)
- sturdy footwear or boots
- protective gardening gloves
- a packed lunch and some snacks
- a water bottle (which can be topped up on site)
